Highlights of Successes

Public Education: The Kids Are Priority One coalition has increased awareness among policymakers and the public regarding early care and education issues through dissemination of coalition brochures and other written materials; presentations to local and statewide organizations; the coalition's e-network; and its web site.

Citizen Lobbying: Using the Kids Are Priority One e-network and other outreach tools, the coalition has been able to effectively involve and mobilize large numbers of Vermonters around specific issues that affect young children and their families. For example, early childhood activists played a pivotal role in securing an increase in the Child Care Subsidy Program (2001), staving off budget cuts to early childhood services (2003) and ensuring that child care was included in the "Jobs Bill" (2003).

Leadership Development: Through leadership development trainings at the local and statewide level and the development of regional Kids Are Priority One teams, the coalition has supported the development of new leaders who are committed to speaking out on early care and education issues.

Coalition-Building: By reaching out to diverse organizations and individuals who care about Vermont's children, Kids Are Priority One has helped to build bridges and forge new partnerships aimed at strengthening Vermont's early childhood services and programs.

Economic Development and Planning Efforts: Kids Are Priority One has used "The Economic Impact of Vermont's Child Care Industry," a report published in June 2002 by Windham Child Care Association and the Peace and Justice Center, to stimulate new economic developing and planning efforts that include early care and education.

Policy Development:Kids Are Priority One has played an important role in the North Carolina Intensive Technical Assistance Grant through participation on the Public Engagement and Financing Task Groups. It is also an active member of the statewide Public Engagement Coordinating Committee, which was an outgrowth of the Public Engagement Task Group.
